In Denmark on Queens Margreth’s birthday

A few years ago I went on a short trip. We went to Belgium, Holland and Denmark. All these countries were nice and beautiful, but I remember best one thing from Denmark. It was 16thApril Queen Margrethe’s birthday.

It was a nice celebration near the royal palace in Copenhagen, we mostly missed it, we were late in the city, but then we went towards a large group of people who were holding small boxes and paper boxes and they were moving towards the royal park. We went there too. We saw several men wearing nice bright clothes and a huge carpet of tulips behind them in the park. The men were standing next to piles of tulip bulbs. It turned out that Queen Margrethe were giving out the tulips to everybody who wanted to have some bulbs and her gardeners were packing the bulbs in the boxes or bags people brought. There were very many people. It was the queen’s present to her people. So I and my friend decided to have a few too. I took a lunch box I had with me and asked the gardener to give me some. He smiled at me and packed several bulbs to my box. I brought the bulbs to Poland and I planted them in my garden. Each spring I wait for them to bloom and I tell the story of their origin to my grandchildren and they always want to hear it again. The tulips are beautiful – red with a yellow lining on the petals.
